Thermo Fisher Scientific today said that Japan's National Police Agency had purchased 51 of the firm's LXQ linear ion trap mass spectrometers and other instruments for toxicology and forensics uses.

The firm said that in addition to the LXQ mass specs, which will be used for toxicology screening in 47 prefecture offices, the NPA purchased 27 Nicolet 6700 FT-IR spectrometers with Continuum microscopes. The NPA will use those in about half of those offices for forensics work.

Thermo Fisher said that the NPA previously used a single quadrupole LCMS for analyzing drugs and toxic substances.
