Thermo Fisher Scientific Sponsors Industry Symposia on Stem Cell Research

Hits:2560   Date: 6/10/2008

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced its sponsorship of the Industry Wednesday Symposia in Philadelphia on June 11, preceding the 6th International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) Annual Meeting. With presentations from leading experts, the Thermo Fisher Scientific symposium, "Strategies and Current Technologies for Accelerating Stem Cell Research", will provide stem cell scientists with information on the latest tools and techniques available for their research.

The symposium showcases the expertise of Thermo Fisher Scientific around key stem cell research technologies as presented through the company's Stem Cell Excellence™ program, which was introduced in 2007. Speakers from industrial and clinical backgrounds will cover topics ranging from the practical considerations for the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into hepatocyte-like cells, and the current and future use of pluripotent stem cells. Delegates will learn about new methods for the quantitative detection of up-regulated and down-regulated proteins and explore techniques used for the discovery and characterization of regulatory molecules involved with differentiation.

Dr. Yair Argon from the department of pathology, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, will present data and discuss how the identified GRP94-dependent proteins are essential for embryonic development and the differentiation of embryonic stem cells. Further topics include: the differentiation of adipose derived and Wharton's jelly derived mesenchymal stem cells into hepatocyte-like cells, presented by Anant Kamath, COO of Cellular Engineering Technologies; and the current and future uses of pluripotent stem cells, delivered by Robin Wesselschmidt, President of Primogenix. Thermo Fisher Scientific will also be providing in-depth presentations on the use of RNAi screening for the identification of critical miRNAs for human mesenchymal stem cell differentiation, and the use of high content analysis to accelerate stem cell research.

Julie Sperry, vice president, strategic marketing, Thermo Fisher Scientific said, "We are dedicated to serving the scientific community and feel our wealth of in-house expertise and breadth of best-in-class products can support stem cell scientists with their pioneering research." Sperry continued, “As such we are delighted to be aligned with this society event. With an excellent program of presentations, we aim to provide information on the technologies and strategies that are currently being applied."
