Thermo Fisher Scientific Expands Industry-leading Mass Spectrometry Portfolio Introduces New Integrated Solutions for Protein Research, Cellular Science and General Laboratory Applications

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (NYSE: TMO), the world leader in serving science, will unveil its expanded line of LTQ Orbitrap(TM) mass spectrometers, as well as other new research and discovery solutions, at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) Conference being held June 3 - 7 in Indianapolis, Ind. The new introductions reflect Thermo Fisher Scientific's continuing commitment to deliver innovative mass spectrometry technologies to every laboratory, from complex research and discovery applications to routine testing.

New product highlights at the conference from the company's Thermo Scientific brand include:

  • Thermo Scientific LTQ Orbitrap XL(TM): This new system builds on our original LTQ Orbitrap to deliver even higher levels of performance for both protein identification and biomarker discovery. New HCD octopole collision cell technology provides superior capability for challenging protein post-translational modification analysis, supporting both labeled and label-free peptide quantitation. The system offers multiple collision modes for definitive MSn structural characterization of small molecules. Orbitrap XL delivers improved sensitivity in MS and MSn, rapid scan rates, higher mass accuracy and resolving powers of up to 100,000. It is compatible with, and upgradeable to, an Electron Transfer Dissociation (ETD) option for controlled dissociation of peptides and proteins in advanced proteomics research.
  • Thermo Scientific LTQ Orbitrap Discovery(TM): This new configuration brings Orbitrap technology into the price range of high-end Q-TOF systems, providing a cost-effective alternative for general proteomics and metabolomics applications. The LTQ Orbitrap Discovery features high resolution and excellent mass accuracy for unequivocal characterization of trace level, isobaric peptides. It provides high-throughput, label- free profiling of differentially expressed analytes and, when combined with the MSn capability, makes the instrument ideal for small molecule characterization and structural elucidation.
  • Thermo Scientific LCQ Fleet(TM) Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer: This newest addition to our LCQ line of ion trap mass spectrometers achieves cost- effective, rapid and confident sample analysis for the general analytical laboratory as well as for toxicological screening, natural products characterization and peptide identification applications. The robust and easy-to-use LCQ Fleet is ideal for routine compound identification in complex matrices, providing maximum structural information at lower detection levels and with low levels of sample consumption.
  • Thermo Scientific TSQ Quantum GC(TM) Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer: This powerful GC-MS/MS instrument extends our TSQ portfolio, providing higher sensitivity and lower detection limits for regulated environmental, food, toxicology, pharmaceutical and clinical research applications. An innovative scan function allows simultaneous quantification and structural confirmation at the lowest limits of quantitation. It is a highly sensitive and versatile GC triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, and can switch easily between GC and LC modes.

Other new technology developments to be announced by Thermo Fisher Scientific at ASMS include:

  • Expansion of FAIMS technology to Thermo Scientific ion trap mass spectrometers, including Orbitrap hybrids. This breakthrough technology was introduced on Thermo Scientific Quantum triple quadrupole mass spectrometers at ASMS 2006, and addresses the needs of scientists requiring more definitive results and multiple modes of separation. The FAIMS capability eliminates background interferences and allows additional separation based on charge state, shape and molecular conformation, which significantly improves specificity, spectral quality and dynamic range.
  • Launch of novel Thermo Scientific Pierce(R) SILAC Protein Quantitation Kits optimized for use with Thermo Scientific mass spectrometers. These new SILAC (Stable Isotope Labeling with Amino Acids in Cell Culture) kits provide comprehensive identification, characterization and quantitation of cellular proteins, giving researchers an all-in-one solution for the analysis of protein abundance. Published research and poster presentations at ASMS will show application of SILAC, combined with the LTQ Orbitrap and Thermo Scientific Hyclone cellular media, to the elucidation of critical cellular protein pathways and interactions.

"We continue to deliver powerful new workflow tools for our customers in the laboratory," noted Dr. Ian Jardine, vice president of global research and development for Thermo Fisher Scientific. "We're bringing together our best- in-class instrumentation, software and reagents to meet the needs of researchers across many disciplines. Furthermore, we are incorporating new technologies, such as ETD and FAIMS, into a wide range of Thermo Scientific mass spectrometry systems to make these innovations accessible to more scientists."
