The stereotaxic instrument, also known as the stereotaxic apparatus, is a three-degree coordinate system specified by landmarks or other reference points outside the skull to determine the location of certain neural structures in the subcortical area for directional stimulation, destruction, injection of drugs, guided potentials, and other investigations under nondirect visual exposure.

It uses some anatomical marks on the surface of the animal skull, such as the sagittal suture, the central axis of the external auditory canal, the central part of the inferior orbital margin, the center of the anterior chimney (bregma), the tip of the herringbone suture (lamda) and the root of the upper teeth, to determine the location of each structure in the deep brain from the outside.
