Image Intensifier Helps Advance Fusion Research

The new SIL-4 high-resolution image intensifier from Specialised Imaging can be synchronised to almost any high-speed camera or video system. Constructed around high gain microchannel plate image intensifiers, these units provide a wide range of sensitivity, gain and resolution options to satisfy even the most demanding imaging applications.
Advances in the field of Fusion research rely on time-resolved plasma diagnostics to characterise rapidly evolving phenomena such as edge-localised modes, filament formation, turbulence and radiative instabilities within magnetically confined or inertial fusion plasmas.
The new SIL-4 high resolution image intensifier
The SIL-4 can capture events that emit radiation at the shorter wavelengths of the UV region right through to the near infrared. Triggered synchronously at high speed, the SIL-4 allows fast framing rates (up to 1,000,000 frames per second) and short exposure times (down to 20ns) for investigating rapidly evolving, low-light fusion processes. An integral mechanical capping shutter is included to provide additional protection for the sensitive image intensifier.
Combined with a fast, high-sensitivity camera from Specialised Imaging that offers nanosecond-to-microsecond exposure control, high quantum efficiency, low read noise and wide dynamic range - Fusion researchers using the SIL-4 image intensifier can resolve weak optical, UV or X-ray emissions (using scintillator screen) with controllable gain to give images without saturation. This provides spatially and temporally accurate data for validating fusion plasma models and improving reactor performance.
