Specialised Imaging reports how researchers at the University of Michigan have undertaken simultaneous ultra-fast imaging and streak image capture on bursting microscopic droplets to provide a unique insight into a transient event that cannot be achieved with single-point measurements.

The unique optical design of the SIM series of cameras allows other optical instruments to share the field of view of the framing camera. By combining a SIMD16 ultra-fast framing camera with a streak camera attached to the SIM auxiliary port, the research team used the 2D imaging set-up to gain a better understanding of how their ultrasonic fluid release process can safely and effectively be applied to the delivery of drugs within the human body.
Mr Wai Chan of Specialised Imaging commented “Ultra-fast framing images show extremely detailed 2D spatial information about an event, whereas a streak camera image is a continuous temporal record with picosecond resolution. When combined these images provide a unique visualisation of transient nanosecond timescale events”.

He added “Our SIM series cameras uniquely enable researchers to capture framing and streak data on the same event using the same optical path for direct correlation of 2D and streak image data. Benefiting from using a common optical input and dedicated output window, the SIM Framing / Streak Camera system drastically simplifies optical set up and eliminates perspective distortion (parallax errors). Beneficially, the set-up also allows use of an existing streak camera which can still be used independently”.
Capable of capturing data at 1 billion frames per second, the SIM range of ultra-fast framing cameras offer the ultimate in ultra-high-speed imaging performance to scientists and engineers across all disciplines.
