PerkinElmer Acquires Imaging Company Improvision to Expand HCS Business

PerkinElmer today said it has acquired UK imaging company Improvision for an undisclosed sum.

PerkinElmer said Improvision, which makes 3D and 4D cellular-imaging software and hardware, earned about ₤6 million ($11.9 million) in 2006.

PerkinElmer CEO Gregory Summe said the all-cash purchase will allow the company to offer "a single source for imaging and analysis solutions."

The company said the acquisition "builds upon" the high-content screening platform it acquired when it bought Evotec Technologies in December for $30 million, and that integrate Improvision's and Evotec's product portfolios.

With the acquisition, PerkinElmer adds the Volocity software, which captures, visualizes and analyzes cellular images, and a software system for cellular control and analysis.

PerkinElmer said the software will complement its Ultraview Live Cell Imaging systems, which it uses for high-speed, multi-dimensional imaging.
