Pall Corporation Chosen to Supply Critical Filters for Westinghouse AP1000 Nuclear Reactors
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y., October 19, 2010 - Pall Corporation (NYSE:PLL), a global leader in filtration, separation and purification, has been awarded a contract to supply nuclear grade filters for Westinghouse Electric Company’s AP1000 next generation nuclear reactors. Westinghouse technology is the basis for approximately one half of operating nuclear plants globally. By greatly improving water chemistry in critical applications such as reactor coolant, fuel pool, and radwaste, Pall’s custom engineered filters enhance worker safety and improve the reliability of nuclear power plants.
Pall nuclear filters remove particles from reactor water at 0.1 micron, a level that exceeds all regulatory requirements and has become the industry benchmark in the U.S. They utilize a 100% incinerable design that reduces waste volume, the corresponding operating and disposal costs, and the environmental footprint of power plants.
“We are pleased to partner with an innovator like Westinghouse in the evolution of this promising solution to today’s energy needs,” said Greg Heilbrunn, senior vice president, global marketing, Pall Energy. “The Pall filters were designed to the exacting technical specifications of the Westinghouse AP1000 reactor and will be an integral part of the plant design.”
Advanced filtration capabilities are essential to the safe and reliable operation of current and future generation, high-efficiency reactors. Nuclear power is expected to play a key role in meeting the continually increasing global demand for power. As a non-petroleum-based energy source, nuclear power is a clean-burning technology that generates electricity in large quantities with no greenhouse gas emissions.
In its latest report, the International Atomic Energy Agency projects an increase in the global nuclear capacity of more than 80% in the next twenty years. To help meet this demand, the United States Department of Energy and the power generation industry are actively partnering in the Nuclear Power 2010 program (NP2010) to develop and bring to market advanced nuclear plant technologies.
