Cry1Ia is a unique insecticidal protein from Bacillus thuringiensis because it has biochemical properties similar to Cry and VIP proteins. Cry1Ia has conserved domains of other Cry proteins, but is not produced in paraspore crystals. The Cry1Ia protein is activated by the intestinal juice of the target pest to obtain an activated toxin fragment, which binds to the midgut epithelial cells of the pest to form holes, leading to intestinal paralysis and eventually death due to sepsis.
