    What is rederivation?
    Rederivation is a process whereby fertilized one-cell embryos are isolated from donor female mice and transferred into foster mothers and raised to term.

    Why should I rederive my animal?
    a) Mice known to harbor pathogenic viruses can be propagated by cleansing embryos of pathogens and raising them in foster mothers free from disease.
    b) Mice imported from other animal facilities are presumed to have diseases until housed in quarantine for a period of 12 weeks. During this time, breeding is not permitted. Depending upon the age of the animal received, reproductive capacity of the animal can drop significantly with increasing age. Rederivation allows us to use mice while they are still optimal for breeding, and to provide the investigator with several transgenic animals at three weeks of age. In addition, this saves two weeks of time.
    c) To increase the likelihood of a successful rederivation, for heterozygous transgenic mice we request you obtain 5 male mice between the ages of 2 to 6 months; for homozygous transgenic mice we request you obtain 5 males and 10 female mice. While rederivation can be performed with fewer animals, this requires additional rounds of mating to obtain embryos and will increase the labor costs of the rederivation.

    B6D2F1 mice will be used for rederivation unless the investigator specifies otherwise. Use of other mouse lines may incur added costs depending upon the mouse line used.
