IDT’s quarterly newsletter talks to researchers barcoding eukaryotic life

 

CORALVILLE, IA – 30^th July 2012 – The latest issue of DECODED, Integrated DNA Technologies’ (IDT’s), quarterly newsletter, highlights The International Barcode of Life Project (iBOL) which aims to construct a comprehensive library of DNA sequence tags, or “barcodes”, for eukaryotic life. The five-year project aims to acquire DNA barcode records for 5 million individual specimens, representing over 500,000 species, creating a publically available resource to drive collaborative projects that describe new species, uncover hidden cryptic diversity and even identify errors in curated collections. Since the protocols are focussed on high throughput batch processing, quality and consistency is critical. IDT primers have provided consistent results, due to IDT’s strict quality control procedures.

The Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding (CCDB), part of the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, is the main DNA barcoding facility for iBOL. CCDB has already generated over 1.2 million barcodes, and its high throughput operation is currently generating barcodes at a rate of 350,000 per year.
