NEW YORK (GenomeWeb News) - Thermo Fisher Scientific has opened a new facility in Northwest England that will house some of the firm's chromatography and diagnostics technologies.

Thermo Fisher said today that the new Center of Excellence for its Anatomical Pathology and Chromatography Consumables businesses, located in Runcorn, Cheshire, will include operations supporting its mass spectrometry and chromatography products, as well as services for the detection and diagnosis of cancer and for advancing research for drug development.

Last year, the company consolidated operations from California and Eastbourne, UK, to Runcorn, and today the company said that its R&D Director has relocated from the US to oversee product development.

The firm said that the new facility has created around 60 new jobs, bringing the total Runcorn work force to more than 200.

The company said that it worked with UK Trade and Development and the Northwest Regional Development Agency on the move to Runcorn, which it selected "due to the strength of the region's academic, hospital, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industry sectors."

Giulio Cerroni, the firm's VP of Anatomical Pathology commercial operations in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific, said in a statement that new facility "is an important investment for the company, and we are already considering the next phase of development for the site."
