Eflornithine hydrochloride, hydrate is a drug found to be effective in the treatment of facial hirsutism. It is a "suicide inhibitor," irreversibly binding to Ornithine Decarboxylase (ODC) and preventing the natural substrate ornithine from accessing the active site. It is an irreversible inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase that suppresses polyamine biosynthesis. It displays antiangiogenic and cytostatic effects in tumor cells but must be used in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents to negate compensatory increases in polyamine content through alternate synthesis pathways.
