Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, abbreviated as DHEA sulfate or DHEA-S, also known as prasterone sulfate, is an endogenous androstane steroid that is produced by the adrenal cortex. It is the 3β-sulfate ester and a metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) that circulates in far greater relative concentrations. The steroid is hormonally inert and is instead an important neurosteroid and neurotrophin, as well as a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of steroid hormones like the androgens and estrogens.
Rat Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) ELISA Kit employs a two-site sandwich ELISA to quantitate DHEA-S in samples. An antibody specific for DHEA-S has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and anyDHEA-S present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for DHEA-S is added to the wells. After washing, Streptavidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of DHEA-S bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.
