Closed System for High Yield Cell Growth Delivers 2.5 Times More Cells per Volumetric Footprint than Standard Stacked Plate Products

CORNING, N.Y., August 01, 2011 – Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) today announced the availability of the Corning® HYPERStack™ Cell Culture Vessel for high yield cell growth. The HYPERStack vessel features a unique multi-layered design based on Corning’s gas-permeable-film technology and delivers greater than 2.5 times more cells in the same volumetric footprint as current stacked-plate products. The increased surface area enables researchers to produce more cells from the same cell population and reduce variability; save space and/or labor by using fewer vessels; and increase cell output without adding people, clean room suites, or incubators.

“HYPERStack represents the next generation of our gas-permeable-film technology designed to better meet the needs of researchers working in the large volume adherent cell culture space where closed systems are required,” said Forrest Roush, business manager, Cells & Bioprocess, Corning Life Sciences. “These vessels provide researchers with not only increased surface area but also enhanced features and accessories compared to standard stacked-plate cell growth products, enabling them to save time, money, and space.”

The HYPERStack vessel is the latest advancement in Corning’s High Yield Performance (HYPER) platform and is currently available in 12- and 36-layer vessels. The HYPERStack-12 has a 6,000cm2 growth area and the HYPERStack-36 has an 18,000cm2 growth area. A 120-layer vessel with 60,000cm2 of growth area will be available in 2012.

HYPERStack Features and Benefits:
• More Cells – 2.5 times more cells per volumetric footprint.
• Closed System – No open fluid manipulations.
• Scalable – Multiple size offerings: 12-layer, 36-layer and 120-layer vessels.
• Ergonomic Design – Easier manipulations.
• Fixed Media Volume – 0.2 mL/cm2 media fills vessel for optimal handling.
• Innovative Assembly – No adhesives, low particulate, fluid path free of animal derived components.
• Lower Disposal Cost – Less volumetric waste per growth area.
