Shimadzu Scientific Instruments Inc. Opens New Laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area -Accelerating New Product and Business Development for the Pharmaceutical and Life Science Fields

 
Shimadzu Scientific Instruments Inc. (SSI, Columbia, Maryland, USA), a Shimadzu Group company, has officially opened its new research and development (R&D) facility in South San Francisco, California. Since April 2024, SSI has been enhancing its R&D division with a focus on developing analytical instruments, software, applications, and lab automation solutions tailored to the needs of pharmaceutical and life science customers in North America.

The San Francisco Bay Area is a premier hub for pharmaceutical and life science R&D, home to one of the world's most vibrant biotech ecosystems. By establishing a lab in this location, SSI aims to deepen engagement with local researchers and institutions, gain a more precise understanding of customer needs, and accelerate the development of new products and technologies. Furthermore, SSI will actively collaborate with life science technology companies and AI-driven startups in the region, enabling a multifaceted approach to advancing its R&D activities.

The South San Francisco Lab will focus on three key research areas: (1) analytical methods for Drug Delivery Systems (DDS), including lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) and adeno-associated viruses (AAVs); (2) new solutions for bioprocessing and preparative purification; and (3) cell culture solutions. The lab will be equipped with the triple quadrupole LCMS-8060RX, the Nexera ultra high-performance liquid chromatograph (UHPLC), the Nexera UC supercritical fluid chromatograph, and the CF3-8030 centrifugal field-flow fractionation system.
