Mobile biological science laboratory brings science education to underserved schools and communities in Silicon Valley

The Agilent-funded Bio MobileLabThe Agilent Foundation has partnered with the Schmahl Science Workshop (SSW), a San Jose, Calif.-based non-profit organization focused on pre-university science education, to deliver a mobile biological science laboratory. The Bio MobileLab, a bio-diesel van that will bring biological experiments to high school students from underserved schools and communities in the Silicon Valley area, was dedicated in a ceremony and celebration event at the Agilent Santa Clara, Calif. headquarters on Sept. 27.

Fully equipped with state-of-the-art test and laboratory equipment, the Bio MobileLab experiments are designed to elicit original thought and promote scientific methodologies. As the first Bio MobileLab in the area it is expected to be a prototype for additional vans and busses focused in different scientific fields -- such as chemistry, physics, robotics and geology - to serve a broader geographic community in the future.

Agilent Technologies Foundation helped fund the purchase, structural modification and equipment for the Bio MobileLab as well as curriculum development. "Agilent has long been committed to serving as an economic and social asset in each community in which it operates," said Terry Lincoln, Agilent's community programs manager. "The BioMobile Lab is a way for us to invest in the engineers and scientists of tomorrow."
