– Symposium explores the potential of waste products
– Regional workshop on the EU’s BIO-TIC project
Hannover. For anyone involved with the bioeconomy, access to a global, interdisciplinary network is absolutely crucial. With the new BiobasedWorld, BIOTECHNICA, the leading European trade fair for biotechnology, the life sciences and lab technology, will be the hub of such a network for three days in October – a network that extends far beyond Germany and indeed beyond Europe. The new partnering platform not only acts as a go-between for high-level contacts to meet up at the show. International partners can also participate via the Internet and talk with potential cooperation partners in secure online chatrooms. Experts from a wide variety of business backgrounds can showcase their skills, the technologies they have to offer and the technologies they are looking for. The advanced search function allows users to target and identify appropriate partners and make contact with them. New users can register right now at
www.biobasedworld.org.
The symposium “Waste products from food production as raw materials for biotechnology” also facilitates better networking – in this case across the divide between different sectors and disciplines. The program of talks on 10 October begins by examining the potential that waste products have to offer. This is followed by presentations on various projects that utilize waste products as diverse as bread, orange peel and whey. The specialized process engineering involved will also be examined. The closing platform discussion will draw all these threads together and give audience members the opportunity to ask questions and contribute to the debate.
As part of the EU project BIO-TIC, a regional workshop will take place at the show on the first day of BIOTECHNICA, Monday 8 October. Drawing on initial analyses from the project, various questions will be discussed, such as: How well is industrial biotechnology performing in Germany? What are the obstacles to progress, and how can they be surmounted? The conclusions will be incorporated into an action plan that takes into consideration both pan-European and regional needs. Areas of special interest for the BIO-TIC project include new types of bioplastics, biofuels for aviation and ethanol extracted from lignocellulose, platform chemicals, biosurfactants and the role of CO2 as a basic material in biotech conversion. The aims of the project are the development of a road map and action plan for industrial biotechnology in Europe, as well as the construction of an online partnering portal to assist industry professionals in making new contacts and initiating joint ventures.
