The US Department of Energy and the US Department of Agriculture have earmarked $4 million for genomics research projects that will support development of bio-based fuels.

This week, The USDA and DOE issued a solicitation for proposals for plant feedstock genomics research projects.

“We are seeking to accelerate research breakthroughs that contribute towards making biofuels a cost-effective alternative to fossil fuels, with a goal of replacing 30 percent of transportation fuels with biofuels by 2030,” said Raymond Orbach, DOE Under Secretary for Science, in a statement.

The awards will fall under an initiative launched earlier this year by the DOE’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research and the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service.

Information about the joint research program, the current solicitation and currently funded projects is available here.
