About the 9th IASP Research Symposium

The 9th IASP Research Symposium “Understanding Mechanisms of Chronic Pain” will be held in Shanghai on October 16-17, 2011. The major topic of this symposium is the latest progress on the mechanisms and therapies of chronic pain. The symposium will consist of two-day oral and poster presentation, discussion and social events. It is sponsored by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), Institute of Neuroscience (ION), Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences (SIBS), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Society for Neuroscience (CSN).

The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) is the leading professional forum for science, practice, and education in the field of pain. Membership in IASP is open to all professionals involved in research, diagnosis or treatment of pain. IASP has more than 7,500 members in 129 countries, 85 national chapters, and 17 Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The Vision Statement of IASP is working together for pain relief throughout the world and IASP wants to bring together scientists, clinicians, health care providers, and policy makers to stimulate and support the study of pain and to translate that knowledge into improved pain relief worldwide. IASP also sponsors research symposia on specific pain-related topics and provides grants, awards, and fellowships to support international pain research.

As part of a major drive for excellence in basic research in the new millennium, the Chinese Academy of Sciences founded the Institute of Neuroscience (ION) on November 27, 1999. The institute is devoted to research in all areas of basic neuroscience, including molecular, cellular and developmental neurobiology, systems and computational neuroscience, as well as cognitive and behavioral neuroscience. At its inception, the Institute aims to establish the infrastructure of a modern research institute that provides an environment for rigorous scientific pursuit and fruitful interactions, a merit-based system for promotion and funding, and a high-quality training program for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

CSN was founded in 1995 in Shanghai, registered at the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China. CSN is affiliated to SIBS of CAS. CSN is a nonprofit learned society of Chinese neuroscientists from universities, research institutions and hospitals all over the country. Currently it has more than 3500 members distributed in all the provinces except for Taiwan province and Xizang Autonomous Region. CSN has already joined International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) in 1995 as corporate member. The aim of the Society is to unite the neuroscientists throughout the country to contribute to the development of neuroscience in China and to the flourish of China's modernization.
