Purpose:

The DJ-3500 Portable Plant Water Potential Pressure Chamber is used to measure plant water potential. It supports research on plant-water relations and the interaction between plants and their environment. It is suitable for studies in plant physiology, ecology, agronomy, forestry, and pasture grasses.

This instrument can measure the water potential of leaves or branches from different regions, crops, and growth stages. It is also suitable for measuring high-water-potential plants, such as crops in desert and arid areas. It can be used for routine water status monitoring and irrigation scheduling. By obtaining this parameter, it provides data support for crop water status research in agricultural monitoring. This helps guide rational water use in crops, grasses, and trees, as well as work on drought-resistant breeding. It is an important instrument for teaching and scientific research, offering simple and fast operation suitable for both indoor and outdoor fieldwork.

Measurement Principle:

There are many methods to measure plant water potential. The most direct method is the pressure chamber technique, which has the advantages of simple construction, convenient operation, and suitability for both indoor and outdoor use.

The basic principle of the pressure chamber method is as follows: Under equilibrium conditions (when there is no water flow in the plant), the water potential in the leaf mesophyll cells is equal to that in the xylem. However, when a leaf or branch is cut from the plant, the pressure potential in the xylem sap increases from a negative value to zero. As a result, water moves from the xylem into the mesophyll cells by osmosis, causing the xylem sap level to retreat from the cut end of the petiole or stem, forming a meniscus.

When sufficient external pressure is applied to the leaf or branch, water is forced out of the mesophyll cells and back to the cut surface. Under this balanced condition, the pressure reading on the gauge equals the original xylem pressure in the intact plant. The equilibrium pressure measured by the pressure chamber is numerically equal to the water potential of the intact leaf or branch, but with the opposite sign (i.e., negative).

The unit on the pressure gauge is typically set to “Bar.”
