| Cell Line Description |
The WEHI-3 cell line is a mouse leukemia cell line specifically derived from the BALB/c strain. It was originally established from a spontaneous myelomonocytic leukemia in mice. The myelomonocytic cell line WEHI-3 constitutively produces a factor that affects the growth and differentiation of cultured mouse B cells. The cell line also secretes colony stimulating factor (CSF), interleukin 1 (IL 1), but not interleukin 2. In a laboratory setting, WEHI-3 cells have been used to evaluate the differentiation potential of various compounds and bioactivity that modulates the hematopoietic system. These cells have proven to be useful in understanding how alterations in gene expression affect myeloid cells and are an important tool in developing therapeutic strategies against myeloid leukemias. The cell line is also used to establish mouse disease models in vivo by transplantation into susceptible mouse strains to study tumor progression and the efficacy of anticancer drugs. |
