Erythropoietin (EPO) gene is a member of the EPO/TPO family and encodes a secreted, glycosylated cytokine composed of four alpha helical bundles. The protein is found in the plasma and regulates red cell production by promoting erythroid differentiation and initiating hemoglobin synthesis. This protein also has neuroprotective activity against a variety of potential brain injuries and antiapoptotic functions in several tissue types. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Rat Erythropoietin (EPO) ELISA Kit employs a two-site sandwich ELISA to quantitate EPO in samples. An antibody specific for EPO has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and anyEPO present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for EPO is added to the wells. After washing, Streptavidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of EPO bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.
