Lactoferrin (LF), also known as lactotransferrin (LTF), is a globular glycoprotein with a molecular mass of about 80 kDa that is widely represented in various secretory fluids, such as milk, saliva, tears, and nasal secretions. Lactoferrin gene is a member of the transferrin family of genes and its protein product is found in the secondary granules of neutrophils. The protein is a major iron-binding protein in milk and body secretions with an antimicrobial activity, making it an important component of the non-specific immune system. The protein demonstrates a broad spectrum of properties, including regulation of iron homeostasis, host defense against a broad range of microbial infections, anti-inflammatory activity, regulation of cellular growth and differentiation and protection against cancer development and metastasis. Antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal and antiparasitic activity has been found for this protein and its peptides.

Rat Lactoferrin (LTF) ELISA Kit employs a two-site sandwich ELISA to quantitate LTF in samples. An antibody specific for LTF has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and anyLTF present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for LTF is added to the wells. After washing, Streptavidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of LTF bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.
