Ampholytes are synthetically derived, low molecular weight zwitterionic molecules, comprising a multitude of pI values. Because of their capacity to carry both positive and negative charge, they are used to make capillary ampholyte gels and IPG strips.

Ampholytes are synthetically derived, low molecular weight zwitterionic molecules, comprising a multitude of pI values. Because of their capacity to carry both positive and negative charge, they are used to make capillary ampholyte gels and IPG strips. A linear pH-gradient is generated when an electric field is applied and they migrate to the position of their corresponding pI (isoelectric point) and have no resultant net charge. Cleaver Scientific recommends the application of ampholytes in IPG strip rehydration.
