Monosaccharides
A monosaccharide is the most basic form of carbohydrates. They are grouped according to the number of carbon atoms, as triose, tetrose, pentose or hexose sugars. Examples of monosaccharides include glucose, fructose and galactose. Monosaccharides have many important biological functions such as storage and release of energy and formation of cellular structures. Glycosidic bonds link several monosaccharides to form oligosaccharides and polysaccharides.
