BackgroundCHMP6, also known as VPS20, is a protein encoded by the human gene CHMP6 and belongs to the charged multivesicular body protein family. It is a core component of the ESCRT-III (endosomal sorting complex required for transport III) complex, which is essential for the formation of multivesicular bodies (MVBs) and the sorting of endosomal cargo proteins into these MVBs. MVBs are involved in the degradation of membrane proteins, such as growth factor receptors, lysosomal enzymes, and lipids, by transporting them to lysosomes. CHMP6 is also known to interact with other components of the ESCRT machinery, such as CHMP4 and members of the ESCRT-II complex, to regulate cargo sorting and membrane remodeling processes. The protein is highly conserved across species and contains specific domains like coiled-coil structures and an N-myristoylation site, which are crucial for its function. bio-equip.cn
