CD206, also known as the mannose receptor (MRC1), is a highly glycosylated type I transmembrane protein primarily expressed on the surface of macrophages and dendritic cells. It plays a crucial role in the innate immune response by mediating the endocytosis and phagocytosis of various pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, through its ability to bind to mannan-coated cell walls or envelopes. CD206 is a marker for alternatively activated M2 macrophages, which are characterized by their anti-inflammatory phenotype and are involved in wound healing and immune tolerance. In the context of cancer, tumor-associated macrophages often exhibit high levels of CD206, contributing to tumor progression by promoting immunosuppression, metastasis, and angiogenesis.
