Background

PI3 Kinase p110β, also known as PIK3CB, is a catalytic subunit of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) family, which plays a crucial role in cellular processes such as growth, metabolism, and tumorigenesis. This isoform, along with p110α, generates lipid second messengers that initiate multiple signal transduction cascades upon receptor activation. In the context of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), p110β overexpression is associated with clinical significance and specific mechanisms. High expression rates of p110β in NSCLC have been reported to be around 41.8%. Its overexpression is particularly linked to the loss of PTEN, a negative regulator of the PI3K pathway, and is negatively correlated with EGFR mutations. This suggests that p110β may play a role in tumors where PTEN is deficient, potentially driving tumor survival and progression. Moreover, studies have shown that p110β has kinase-independent functions in regulating cell proliferation and trafficking.
