Procedure Overview

The beta-lactamase test pad provides a qualitative method for detecting beta-lactamase in milk. The nitrocefin is coated on the pad. If there is beta-lactamase in milk, it hydrolyzes the beta-lactam ring of nitrocefin, producing cephalosporanic acid. A distinctive color change is associated with this reaction. The pale yellow nitrocefin turns pink after hydrolysis within the time limits of the test.
