NAT8L encodes a single-pass membrane protein, which contains a conserved sequence of the GCN5 or NAT superfamily of N-acetyltransferases and is a member of the N-acyltransferase (NAT) superfamily. This protein NAT8L is a neuron-specific protein and is the N-acetylaspartate (NAA) biosynthetic enzyme, catalyzing the NAA synthesis from L-aspartate and acetyl-CoA. NAA is a major storage and transport form of acetyl coenzyme A specific to the nervous system. NAT8L mutation results in primary NAA deficiency (hypoacetylaspartia).

Rat N-acetylaspartate synthetase (NAT8L) ELISA Kit employs a two-site sandwich ELISA to quantitate NAT8L in samples. An antibody specific for NAT8L has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and anyNAT8L present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for NAT8L is added to the wells. After washing, Streptavidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of NAT8L bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.
