GAL encodes a homodimeric glycoprotein that hydrolyses the terminal alpha-galactosyl moieties from glycolipids and glycoproteins. This enzyme predominantly hydrolyzes ceramide trihexoside, and it can catalyze the hydrolysis of melibiose into galactose and glucose. A variety of mutations in this gene affect the synthesis, processing, and stability of this enzyme, which causes Fabry disease, a rare lysosomal storage disorder that results from a failure to catabolize alpha-D-galactosyl glycolipid moieties.

Mouse Alph-galactoyl (A-GAL) ELISA Kit employs a two-site sandwich ELISA to quantitate A-GAL in samples. An antibody specific for A-GAL has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and anyA-GAL present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for A-GAL is added to the wells. After washing, Streptavidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of A-GAL bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.
