In bone physiology, the C-terminal telopeptide (or more formally, carboxy-terminal collagen crosslinks, and known by the acronym CTX) is a telopeptide that can be used as a biomarker in the serum to measure the rate of bone turnover. It can be useful in assisting clinicians to determine a patient's nonsurgical treatment response as well as evaluate a patient's risk of developing complications during healing following surgical intervention. The test used to detect the CTX marker is called the Serum CrossLaps, and it is more specific to bone resorption than any other test currently available.

Human C-telopeptide of type II collagen (CTX-II) ELISA Kit employs a two-site sandwich ELISA to quantitate CTX-II in samples. An antibody specific for CTX-II has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and anyCTX-II present is bound by the immobilized antibody. After removing any unbound substances, a biotin-conjugated antibody specific for CTX-II is added to the wells. After washing, Streptavidin conjugated Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound avidin-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of CTX-II bound in the initial step. The color development is stopped and the intensity of the color is measured.
