The TFE3 protein encoded by this gene plays an important role in cell growth, proliferation, and osteoclast and macrophage differentiation. This gene participates in insulin signaling and could be a therapeutic target for diabetes. Chromosomal translocations involving different partners have been identified in renal cell carcinoma alveolar sarcomas.
